Ostfront: Hitler's War on Russia 1941-45
Hitler's flawed dream of conquest in the East brought about the end of the Thousand Year Reich, and all in little over a thousand days. The War in the East remains the greatest land campaign in history in every sense; it was fought on a mile front from the Arctic Circle to the Caspian Sea, involved more personnel and cost more casualties than any other. Most popular books on the Russian front are based on German sources.
The testimonies of de-briefed German officers together with published memoirs have dominated in the English-speaking world. Now, with the availability of hitherto secret Russian archives, a much fuller picture is emerging. Charles Winchester examines the structure, doctrine, leadership, strengths and weaknesses of the Red Army and the German armed forces in the summer of He has published a number of books and articles on 19th and 20th century military history. Soviet (Russian) Study of War
Hardcover in full black cloth with DJ. Condition new, square tight and crisp book, no edgewear, sharp corners, no names no underlinings no highlights, no bent page corners, not a reminder. In some respects a reference book, many spelling mistakes, grammatical errors, kindle version no good for looking at photographs contained in book. Tends to gloss over darker side of ss. Be warned the Kindle version of this has such poor spelling and grammar as to be almost unreadable in places. This is a good military history of the Waffen SS, concentrating on the elite's tanacity and bravery on the Eastern Front, but making only passing mention of the darker side of the SS Einsatzgruppen and Theodore Eike's thugs.
It gives an account of the genesis of the unit, as well as the ideological angle, and pulls no punches when dealing with the atrocities committed. A good read for anyone interested in this aspect of history. Very mixed bag The good: good photographs and the text is a good basic entry for people interested in this subject. The bad: Desperately needs an editor and a proof reader. The number of sentences and paragraphs that were practically non-sensual is quite shocking.

About this Product
China and the United Kingdom spend more on defense than does Russia. The United States far outstrips every other nation in military expenditures with a defense budget ten times greater than that of Russia. Post-Soviet Russia is still the largest country in the world. But defending a country twice the size of the United States with half the population and half as large an army is not necessarily an advantage.
